Burning: Beams & Combustion
A burning planet is one that is considered extremely debilitated because it is too close to the Sun. From an observational perspective, you will not see a burning planet it in the sky as the powerful glare of the Sun will outshine the light of the burnt planet. There are two distinct regions of this debilitation – 1) combustion and 2) being within the beams with combustion being the most extreme. The planet being within the beams is said to be weak because it is either going into or leaving the extreme debilitation zone. When a planet leaves the beams, it will make its heliacal rise (rising from the Sun).
This burning zone varies in distance from the Sun depending on which astrologer you ask as well as which planet is involved. In general terms, a combustion zone is around 8° from the Sun, while the area between 7°-15° is within the beams. After this point, you should be able to see a planet rise for the first time after being invisible within the Sun’s beams for a period of time.
The best way to find out exactly when heliacal rise occurs is to get out and see it for yourself. This morning, I witnessed Venus make its heliacal morning rise after it was enveloped in the Sun’s rays for about 3-4 weeks. Venus was 12° separated from the Sun.

The heliacal rise of a planet will depend on your location, horizon line, weather and atmospheric conditions. These are all environmental factors that will be important for you in this time and space. No book or ancient astrologer’s opinion will ever be able to determine this exactly for you. And, the moment of heliacal rise might be different next time you observe the same planet. There’s no better truth than the current moment!
Over the years, I’ve observed that morning rise occurs sooner than the equivalent evening rise due to the contrast of the sky’s colour. In the morning, the sky changes from night to day. The darkness of the sky at that time makes the morning star easier to see. In the evening, the day sky’s lightness dominates the visual background, so it takes a little longer, and a greater distance from the Sun to be able to see a planet rise.
Using the concept of burning interpretively
When the glare of the sun outshines the closer planet, this is considered a great debility, given that all planets want to shine and be seen. This means that the significations of the burnt planet will be blocked, damaged, overpowered or corrupted.
For example, Saturn rules mining and heavy industries; ones that are dirty, connected to infrastructure and bureaucratic systems. In March/April 2026, Saturn was within the burning zone and major world headlines centered around the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz which severely disrupted global energy and shipping, and pushed crude oil prices to record level. The world’s access to oil and fuel was blocked.
From a Vedic perspective, a planet in combustion will have its external significations burnt however, its internal or spiritual purpose can be strengthened to great heights. So if someone was born with a combust Saturn, they may eventually learn to channel their frustrations or powerlessness with bureaucracy towards more spiritually fulfilling work with the refugees, homeless, disabled or disadvantaged people – all ruled by Saturn.
A modern psychological interpretation is that this is a time of withdrawal, retreat, isolation and entering into the abyss of unconscious matter. The burning of the Sun’s rays echoes the culturally universal idea of using the power of fire to cleanse and purify the corrupted parts within ourselves, to restore fire, vitality and life.
Intentional sky watching
While modern computers are great, we must not forget that the sky was our original computer where astronomical data was stored. We analysed this data in our observational sit spots on the land, being the conduit of deep transmissions and learnings between the sky and earth, where the light of the stars could travel through.
This is the science of light. Light is knowledge. Light is consciousness. Studying the light will awaken you from the illusions of the world.
