Moon Gardening Calendar (Nov/Dec 2020)

by | Nov 7, 2020 | Moon Gardening | 6 comments

Every month, on the Saturday closest to the waning 3rd Quarter Moon, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.

Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 7 November, covering the period between 7 November to 7 December 2020.

Optimal times for planting

5 / 6 / 7 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Excellent, fertile days for tree planting or establishing anything that grows on the same root stock each year.

18 / 19 Nov (1st Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – Fertile time for planting and transplanting annuals with seeds outside the flower / fruit and to promote strong roots, stalks and pulp

23 / 24 Nov (2nd Quarter, Moon in Pisces) – Great time for planting and transplanting annuals with seeds inside the fruit / flower, to promote quick germination and high yields. Also great for root crops.

27 after 3pm / 28 / 29 Nov (2nd Quarter, Moon in Taurus) – Excellent time for planting and transplanting annuals with seeds inside the fruit / flower and root crops. Great for promoting quick growth or growing to multiply plants / propagation.

3 / 4 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Excellent time for planting out perennials, trees and anything that grows on the same root stock, grafting and irrigating for maximum absorbtion. Promotes high yields and quick gemination.

7 November (3rd Quarter, Moon in Virgo) – Generally infertile for planting however plants, trees and perennials for foliage and leafy growth (ie. shade trees) would be good to plant / transplant in this sign. Use this sign for bringing organisation to your garden and sheds.

optimal times for clearing

The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.

8 / 9 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Leo) –Burning off, clearing and removal of unwanted pests, plants and things in the garden shed.

10 / 11 Nov (4th Quarter, Moon in Virgo) – Feed soil, turn compost and prune / clear to encourage growth

12 / 13 Nov (4th Quarter, Moon in Libra) – Prune / clear to destroy unwanted growth. Pest  eradication.

14 Nov (4th Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Prune to encourage growth

20 / 21 / 22 Nov (1st Quarter, Moon in Aquarius) – Infertile days for planting, use destroying unwanted plants

25 / 26 / 27 Nov (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aries) – Barren energy for planting. Can be used to destroy unwanted plants / weeds.

1 / 2 Dec (3rd Quarter, Moon in Gemini) – Clearing, weeding or pruning to discourage growth. Infertile time for planting.

5 / 6 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Infertile planting days but great for burning off (if permitted), clearing, weeding and pruning to discourage growth.

Optimal times for rest

The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.

8 / 9 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Rest the garden and your body.

15 Nov (New Moon in Scorpio) – Rest, plan out your month, design your gardens

30 Nov (Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Gemini) – Rest, cleanse, detox, spring clean. Do not plant or commence anything.

optimal times for non-planting tasks

The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.

      You’re welcome Lou.

  3. Ines

Thank you so much! I found your page through serendipity; and what a blessing! I live in Puerto Rico; climate is different from the states; do the rules still apply to other parts of the world?

    • Shu Yap

My pleasure Ines – lovely to hear from you all the way from Puerto Rico! There would be a slight variance of the times as PR is 15 hours behind Eastern Australian time. It would be good to minus 15 hours from these dates to get a more accurate moon position for your region.
