Happy Autumn Equinox to friends in the southern region and happy Spring Equinox to our northern region community. This moment of equal day and equal night is one of my favourite times of the year, regardless of whether it’s spring or autumn. For me, I think it’s about the complete balance reflected in our environment that feels so comforting.

From the viewpoint of classical philosophy, the equal portions of nocturnal and diurnal energy at the Equinoxial moment allows us to achieve some kind of internal, alchemical balance of Nous and Soul, which are usually striving for homeostasis. Nous represents our conscious mind – the intellect and voice of reason that speaks through the form of supreme Godliness (or the Demiurge as Plato puts it). While Soul, is the daily embodiment of such forms which fuses their actualisation through the interaction with our physical nature. Both aspects of ourselves have the opportunity to support each other during the Equinox, potentially making us feel integrated and complete.

Have you ever observed the setting or rising sun in an intentional manner during the March Equinox before? I highly recommend this practice as it provides an opportunity to tap into this alchemical Nous-Soul integration. The March Equinox is particularly powerful as the Sun enters its exaltation sign of Aries (20 Mar) which brings the highest honours and levels of elation possible for your sense of purpose. Sitting within this light and fusing it into your being, through whatever intentions you see fit, is a powerful act of balanced self-actualisation that can only be available to you at this moment.

Being ruled by Mars both in the sign of Aries and its first decan, the next 10 days following the Equinox can be used as a powerful time for decision-making and self focus where you can tap into reserves of courage that you didn’t think possible. Now is the time to initiate your bold plans, afterall, this is the astrological new year. There’s a ruthless energy that this first decan of Aries contains, giving you the ability to cut off the unnecessary ‘dead wood’ and pave a new path forward. Hopefully, last week’s shift of energetic quality might have prepared you with some inspirations for new beginnings and plans.

Having said this, Mars will enter the murky terrain of Pisces (22 Mar) shortly after the Equinox, which might make decision making slightly more complex and convoluted. Afterall, what’s a quest without challenges and trials? As suggested by the descending and condensing nature of the Phlegmatic Piscean sign, this quest could be calling for you to brood into internal reflection where you might dive deeply into your unseen, unconscious or forgotten sides. Mars has spent the last three months in Saturnian-ruled signs where you might have felt the more constructive and straight-shooting style of this task-driven planet. However, with its entrance into Pisces, Mars’ energy will be diffused and somewhat confused, hence you too could feel a little lost as you commando crawl through the mud on your way to new adventures. If you’re on a deadline, use the first four days this week to get sorted! After Mars enters Pisces, your energy is better spent on planning out your bigger scope and next steps.

This Equinox also sees Venus make her yearly conjunction with Saturn (21 Mar) which could stimulate you to think about your long term desires. Every year when these two planets join, we’re forced to put aside instant gratification and frivolous concerns in favour of substantial and significant matters that can deliver long range value. The ‘adulting’ principle will come in strongly with this aspect, as it clashes with whimsical temptations of immediate joy and pleasure. Venus’ sextile to Jupiter (24 Mar) shortly after will help you see the bigger picture too. All in all, Venus’ connection with the Saturn Jupiter sextile will offer the potential for you to find a sense of stability in some noteworthy plans for the future.

Perhaps the Venus-Saturn tension could play out in your personal relationships where one person sides with the more disciplined Saturnian voice, while the other advocates for the capricious longing of Venusian desire. Remember that if tensions arise around this theme, it could be a calling for you to consider what your significant long range priorities might be. Try to tap into the inherent qualities of refinement, class, sophistication and poise in whatever you make of this transit as it will be available for you.

Therefore, with important cycles starting during this astrological new year, there’s a lot more significance embedded into this week that could be flying under the radar. There’s a possibility of being caught off guard if you’re not on top of your game, which could mean missed opportunities. But given Mars’ placement, fatigue is a real thing this month so be careful to focus on what’s important and get plenty of self replenishment in that deep Piscean well. Wishing you all the best for a week of new beginnings and the integration of Nous and Soul.
