Venus in the underworld

Even though Venus is invisible right now, there’s so much happening behind the scenes. Labeled the ‘underworld phase’, this part of the Venus cycle is a potent mix of secrecy, recalibration, exploration of the shadows, surrender, transmutations, rebirths and emergence.

Feeling into the symbology of this time, we can expect to experience similar themes to areas of life ruled by Venus. This points to relationships, social connections, love, beauty, the arts, creativity, fertility, agriculture and all pleasurable joys in our life.

Have you noticed a silencing or internalisation of these areas in your life since the 11th February approximately? Those who are ruled by Venus (Libra & Taurus) or have a Venus timelord activation this year will certainly feel a significant fermentation of emotions within. Book a consultation to find out what timelords are being activated for you.

Some important points relating to the current Venus cycle are outlined below. You can also refer to my previous articles for more reading on the Venus cycle:

Bittersweet: Venus at her exaltation degree – 27° Pisces

On the 19th March 2021, Venus hits her exaltation degree of 27° Pisces where she’s said to be at her ultimate peak vibration. However this year, Venus’ peak exaltation comes with a bittersweet nature.

She’s awfully close to the Sun, who is boiling her cool, moist ways. In the northern Australian surf coasts, the box jellyfish becomes lethal when the water’s temperature raises by only 1 degree. Similarly, with Venus’ combustion with the Sun, we may find ourselves stinging or being stung by those close to our hearts.

In the myth of Inanna, this point of Venus’ cycle is set deep in the underworld phase. Inanna is slayed and hung on a meat hook by her sister Erishkigal. It is a point of total surrender and succumbing to a greater force.

Being hidden behind the Sun makes this Venus gravitate towards secrecy or holding the pressures within. If you’re feeling Venus’ deepening pull, you may also feel the need to stay silent and suspend for the moment. However, the exaltation forces are trying to raise you up to be seen. And, so we see the up and down pull of this bittersweet moment.

Just as the box jellyfish suspends itself in the ocean’s waters, or Inanna hangs silently from a meat hook, we wait. We wait in reflection on our painful memories and how they can transmute into pathways for healing.

Revival: Venus Cazimi 5°50 Aries

On the 26th March, Venus changes signs and will ride in the chariot of the Sun where she embraces the warmth of her King, her lover. In the myth of Inanna, this Cazimi point is when she receives 60 drops of medicine made by Enki, the god of water and wisdom. She’s revived and rebirths in the evening sky with a powerful roar in the fierce sign of Aries.

Sidenote & CSA: I happen to have a real life Enki my local apothecary and distillery creating magical blends of water, wisdom and herbs – check them out!

Just like our powerful first breathe that brings life into our body, this rebirthing of Venus from Morning Star to Evening Star is a potent moment.  It is a reset of our heart matters, a shift in our perception and a chance to redesign a future based on a social or relationship model that better reflects our identity.

It’s no coincidence that Venus transmutes from morning star (yang) to evening star (yin) then vice versa every 9 months, mirroring the human gestation period. She is after all, the goddess of fertility. So take the time to reflect on the fact that we fluctuate through periods of yin or yang consciousness every 9 months, especially around the way we connect to people.

Rebirth: Venus Evening Rise 24°09 Taurus

On the 4th May 2021, Venus finally ends this period of invisibility and the underworld phase, and emerges in full beauty on the western horizon shortly after sunset. For those who are keen sky watchers, this is one of those special moments you don’t want to miss!

For those with Venus activations or who are natally ruled by Venus, it’s a great practice to honour your ruler by observing these significant moments. It is said that the light of the planet touching your face increases the transmission and connection with that planet’s intelligences.

After the Sun sets and the skies darken, you’ll see a bright star emerging from the west. This signifies the rebirthed Venus, ready to guide the next 9 months with her newly acquired knowledge and understanding of relationships, social connections, love, beauty, fertility, pleasure and other Venusian matters of the heart.

Venus is now an evening star and hence operates very differently from her morning star form. She’s now more gentle, considered, patient, compassionate and philosophical compared to her defiant and warrior-like morning star form. As evening star, Venus understands the notion of sacrifice more so than her previous morning star incarnation, just as a parent discovers how much of the Self is sacrificed to raise a child. She sees this sacrifice as a form of devotion and mindful intention, just like the Vestal Virgins dedicated their life to keeping the sacred fire burning.

We stood our ground in protests and defence of our personal liberties during the morning star phase. What will the evening star phase bring us – more compassion, understanding, listening, sacrifice, conciliation and patience perhaps? Let’s journey through the ‘yin’ Venusian waters together and see what happens.

Inner Workings of Transmutation: Venus Becoming Evening Star 2021

I’ll be presenting specifically on Venus emerging as an evening star this year at the next Astrology of Awakening Summit: Renewal of Hope.

This is a 4-day conference, with 18 women astrologers presenting various topics around the cosmology of 2021. I can’t think of a more fitting platform to share my talk on Venus and her movements this year. I hope you can join me – registrations are free!
