Moon Gardening Calendar (Sep/Oct 2020)
Every month, on the Saturday closest to the waning 3rd Quarter Moon, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.
Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 12 September, covering the period between 12 September to 12 October 2020.
Optimal times for planting
18 / 19 Sep (1st Quarter, Moon in Libra)
Tilling the soil, planting annual flowers
20 / 21 Sep (1st Quarter, Moon in Scorpio)
Good time for planting, esp for annuals with seeds outside the fruit/flower, Moon in Scorpio encourages sturdiness and vigorous vine growth
24 Sep (1st Quarter, Moon in Capricorn)
Good time for planting, esp for annuals with seeds outside the fruit/flower and root crops
25 / 26 Sep (2nd Quarter, Moon in Capricorn)
Good time for planting, esp for annuals with seeds inside the fruit/flower and root crops
29 / 30 Sep (2nd Quarter, Moon in Pisces)
Good time for planting, esp annuals with seeds inside the fruit/flower, moist loving plants
4 / 5 Oct (3rd Quarter, Moon in Taurus)
Good time for planting perennials, trees and anything that grows on the same rootstock
optimal times for clearing
The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.
12 / 13 Sep (4th Quarter, Moon in Cancer)
Pruning for growth, dividing or thinning out plants
14 / 15 / 16 Sep (4th Quarter, Moon in Leo)
Weeding, pest reduction, burning off
6 / 7 / 8 Oct (3rd Quarter, Moon in Gemini)
Infrastructure works, landscaping, weeding, pest management, slashing, clearing
9 / 10 Oct (3rd Quarter, Moon in Cancer)
Good time for planting perennials, trees and anything that grows on the same root stock
Optimal times for rest
The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.
17 Sep (New Moon in Virgo) – Rest, planning
2 / 3 Oct (Full Moon in Aries)
optimal times for non-planting tasks
The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.
22 / 23 Sep (1st Quarter, Moon in Sagittarius)
27 / 28 Sep (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aquarius)
1 Oct (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aries)
6 / 7 / 8 Oct (3rd Quarter, Moon in Gemini)
