Moon Gardening Calendar (Oct/Nov 2020)

by | Oct 10, 2020 | Moon Gardening | 2 comments

Every month, on the Saturday closest to the waning 3rd Quarter Moon, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.

Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 10 October, covering the period between 10 October to 8 November 2020.

Optimal times for planting

9 / 10 Oct (3rd Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Good time for planting perennails, trees and anything that grows on the same rootstock

18 / 19 Oct (1st Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Fertile times for planting, esp. for annuals with seeds outside the fruit / flower. Moon in Scorpio encourages sturdiness and vigorous growth. This would also be a good time to till the soil, turn in your compost and activate the microbes.

22 / 23 Oct (1st Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – Great time for planting root crops, pulpy crops and annuals with seeds outside the fruit / flower.

26 / 27 / 28 Oct (2nd Quarter, Moon in Pisces) – Great time to plant out your garden, especially annuals that have seeds inside the fruit / flower. The moist sign of Pisces will help retain moisture in the ground.

2 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Taurus) – geat day for tree planting and fertile for anything that’s perennial. A time for establishing strong roots.

5 / 6 / 7 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Excellent, fertile days for tree planting or establishing anything that grows on the same root stock each year.

optimal times for clearing

The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.

11 / 11 / 13 Oct (4th Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Good time for clearing, weeding, mowing, burning off, pest reduction

14 / 15 / 16 Oct (4th Quarter, Moon in Virgo & Libra) – Clearing, weeding, mowing, burning off, pest reduction, organising, rest

3 / 4 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Gemini) – Weeding, clearing, mowing to discourage growth. Also a good time for pest reduction, getting nets / frost cloths ready.

8 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Rest the garden and your body. Burning off, clearing and removal of unwanted pests, plants and things in the garden shed.

Optimal times for rest

The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.

14 / 15 / 16 Oct (4th Quarter, Moon in Virgo & Libra)

17 Oct  (New Moon in Libra)

1 Nov (Full Moon in Taurus)

8 Nov (3rd Quarter, Moon in Leo)

optimal times for non-planting tasks

The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.

20 / 21 Oct (1st Quarter, Moon in Sagittarius) – Infrastructure works, landscaping, hardscaping, designing layouts, reorganising beds and structures around the garden. Not a fertile time to plant but use this momentum for other garden projects.

24 / 25 Oct (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aquarius) – Not a fertile time for planting but utilse this time to get other jobs done in the garden – infrastructure works, irrigation setup, landscaping, etc.

29 / 30 / 31 Oct (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aries) – Not a fertile time for planting but great for labour intensive, high energy work around the garden including infrastructure works, hardscaping, digging, landscaping, etc.

    What is meant by this?

5 / 6 / 7 Nov “grows on the same root stock each year.”

      Hi Joelle
Generally, the third quarter moon is great for perennials, meaning that these plants will regrow from the same root every year. This includes trees, perennials and biannuals. On the contrary, flowering annuals drop seeds to germinate the next growth before dying off. Hope this makes sense. Cheers Shu
