Moon Gardening Calendar Mar/Apr 2021
Every month, on the Saturday closest to the waning 3rd Quarter Moon, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.
Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 20th March, covering the period between 20 March to 17 April 2021.
Optimal times for planting
22 / 23 Mar (2nd Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Excellent time to plant, transplant, raise seedlings and giving your garden a good soaking. Especially fertile for annuals with seeds inside the fruit / flower.
31 Mar / 1 April (3rd Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Trees, perennials, root crops and all plants growing on the same root stock each year can be planted, transplanted. A deep watering, especially to your trees will be good to do on this Moon.
4 / 5 April (4th Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – Turn your compost or prepare your compost pile, feed the soil, work on nourishing everything subterranean.
8 / 9 / 10 April (4th Quarter, Moon in Pisces) – Turn your compost or prepare your compost pile, feed the soil, work on nourishing everything subterranean. Deep watering of plants and soil to prepare for planting.
13 / 14 / 15 April (1st Quarter, Moon in Taurus) – Excellent time for planting and transplanting, especially for annuals with seeds outside the fruit and flower, root crops and leafy greens. Great time for propagating plants too.
optimal times for clearing
The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth.
20 / 21 Mar (1st Quarter, Moon in Gemini)
24 / 25 / 26 Mar (2nd Quarter, Moon in Leo)
30 Mar (3rd Quarter, Moon in Libra)
2 / 3 April (3rd Quarter, Moon in Sag)
6 / 7 April (4th Quarter, Moon in Aquarius)
11 April (4th Quarter, Moon in Aries)
16 / 17 April (1st Quarter, Moon in Gemini)
Optimal times for rest
The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care.
29 Mar (Full Moon in Libra) – Rest and nourish your body. Harvest crops.
12 April (New Moon in Aries) – Rest, recouperate, plan ahead for the month.
Non-gardening tasks
27 / 28 Mar (2nd Quarter, Moon in Virgo) – Use this time for organising your garden, sheds, etc and if you feel the need to plant, perhaps root crops, shrubs and shade plants are best suited to this semi-fertile sign but probably best to wait for a better time to plant.
24 / 25 / 26 Mar (2nd Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Weeding and pruning to destroy unwanted growth. Also excellent for landscaping, building or burning off (if appropriate).
