Moon Gardening Calendar Feb/Mar 2021

by | Feb 6, 2021 | Moon Gardening

Every month, on the Saturday closest to the waning 3rd Quarter Moon, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.

Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 6 February, covering the period between 6 February to 6 March 2021.

Optimal times for planting

13 / 14 Feb (1st Quarter, Moon in Pisces) – Great time to plant out your garden, especially annuals that have seeds outside the fruit / flower. The moist sign of Pisces will help retain moisture in the ground. Great for quick germination.

17(pm) / 18 / 19 Feb (1st Quarter, Moon in Taurus) – Great time for planting root crops, and annuals with seeds outside the fruit / flower.

22(pm) / 23 / 24 Feb (2nd Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Great time to plant out your garden, especially annuals that have seeds inside the fruit / flower. Deep watering at this time will be beneficial for moisture retention. Quick germination.

28 Feb (3rd Quarter, Moon in Virgo) – If you need to get some trees in the ground, this could be the day. This is the least of the fertile signs but will support shade producing trees and shrubs.

3 / 4 Mar (3rd Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Excellent, fertile days for tree planting or establishing anything that grows on the same root stock each year.

optimal times for clearing

The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.

6 / 7 Feb (4th Quarter, Moon in Sag) – Rest the garden and your body. Burning off, clearing and removal of unwanted pests, plants and things in the garden shed.

11 Feb (4th Quarter, Moon in Aquarius) – Clearing, weeding, mowing, burning off, pest reduction, organising, rest

1 / 2 Mar (3rd Quarter, Moon in Libra) – Weeding, clearing, mowing to discourage growth and getting beds cleared for next season. Also a good time for pest reduction. Perennial flowers are also supported under this moon.

5 / 6 Mar (3rd Quarter, Moon in Leo) –Burning off, clearing and removal of unwanted pests, plants and things in the garden shed.

Optimal times for rest

The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.

8 / 9 / 10 Feb (4th Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – Composting, feeding soils and resting

12 Feb  (New Moon in Aquarius) – Rest, planning, designing

27 Feb (Full Moon in Leo) – Rest, recouperate, self-care

optimal times for non-planting tasks

The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.

15 / 16 / 17(am) Feb (1st Quarter, Moon in Aries) – Infrastructure works, landscaping, hardscaping, designing layouts, reorganising beds and structures around the garden. Not a fertile time to plant but use this momentum for other garden projects.

20 / 21 / 22(am) Feb (2nd Quarter, Moon in Gemini) – Not a fertile time for planting but utilse this time to get other jobs done in the garden – infrastructure works, irrigation setup, landscaping, etc.

25 / 26 Feb (2nd Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Not a fertile time for planting but great for labour intensive, high energy work around the garden including infrastructure works, hardscaping, digging, landscaping, etc. Creative projects for self expression also encouraged.
