The Moon is coming into Fullness as the week starts (1 Aug) which not only lights up our nights so we can see better in the dark but it’s also symbolic of an illumination about the hidden aspects of ourselves. The fullness of the Moon brings greater connection between the seen and unseen, so that we have an opportunity every month to become more whole, integrated and conscious. It also connects us to people in the outer world, offering greater social connections and exchanges that can serve as reflections for our blind spots. The old adage of the Full Moon bringing heightened emotions and weird behaviours in society is merely a reflection of the distortions that our bodies undergo when unconscious matter enters into our conscious minds, just like stepping down in electrical voltage. We can think of ourselves as the transformer undergoing this stepping down process every month.
This electrical analogy is my intentional segway into the Full Moon in Aquarius (1 Aug) which can feel somewhat anxious, energised, volatile, escalating and exciting at the same time. This raw energy has so much potential, so it’s worthy to go into this week to see how you can apply it most productively.
Mars trine Jupiter (1 Aug) occurring at the Full Moon suggests that you could benefit from actively working towards learning or expanding your field in some way. Any big ideas you’ve held, especially around the materiality function of Taurus, is being injected with a helpful dose of energy. Projects involving all the basic desires of life – finances, food, shelter, clothing, warmth and essential possessions can benefit from the hyper-attentive focus of Mars as he trines Jupiter, with the priority being on improvement and the quest for perfecting these matters. Mars might highlight the dissatisfactions and frustrations you’ve been feeling around these areas, and will see to its immediate resolution. You might get a ‘bee in your bonnet’ and drive yourself through the tasks with intense zeal and inspiration. This energy is not sustainable – burning out or losing motivation will eventually take over but the effort might be enough for you to reinvigorate a slow-moving project.
Mars also rules sharp objects and anger so I’m getting an image of the busy bee buzzing about getting things done, but from time to time, you may feel compelled to bring your stinger out in attack or defence mode. Big outbursts, hot headedness and brutal honesty could be an effect of Mars Jupiter so be careful your personal expression doesn’t put you into boiling situations. Remember, this is occurring under the backdrop of a Full Moon which will raise the water levels in your pot. If you find yourself in these situations, it’s good to know that things will fizzle out quickly or you might run out of energy and move onto the next battle. Find an outlet for these two hot fiery planets or risk spontaneous combustion!
Mercury opposes Saturn (2 Aug) the next day which will help to add some careful considerations and precision behind what you’re up to. Mercury, having just risen in the evening skies, is powerfully located in the sign of Virgo. This epithet of Mercury is the wise tutor and experienced operator, and you too can embody this as you recognise the totality of your tacit knowledge, lived experience and unique skill set coming together. Meeting the opposition of Saturn, Mercury offers you an opportunity to bring order to chaos as you can execute with great detail, precision, expertise and problem-solving ability. In addition, Saturn brings a wellspring of knowledge, history, practicality, resourcefulness and accountability that you can draw from. Think of something that you can offer to this Mercury Saturn opposition this week – perhaps it could be some historical research, detailed building work, deep study, a creative project that requires lots of planning, strategy and detailed execution.
For example, my son has been making nerf guns out of cardboard, complete with a trigger mechanism that shoots out real nerf bullets. As we head into this week’s transits, he’s now working on a new ‘automatic’ model with a spring loaded magazine. I can see how he’s being caught into the mind-deepening web of Mercury Saturn, which I’m anticipating might cause some mental tensions and obstacles (Note to self: expect some tantrums) but nevertheless, it’s giving him an outlet for the need to be precise, detailed, strategic and above all, functional. I’m sure the Mars-Jupiter trine is also helping to fuel the project’s energy with big ideas of wars and battles as his motivation. Putting aside this context of an 11 year old mind, can you think of something you’re working on that might benefit from Mercury’s opposition to Saturn this week?
Mercury being so strong at the moment is something to take advantage of. It rules the mind, our speech, our curiosity, knowledge and education, books, words, dexterity, cleverness as well as short journeys. While this week’s opposition to Saturn could present some mental challenges to these areas, when we look to next week, Mercury will come to a trine with Jupiter which points to a successful resolution or reward ensuing (more on that in the next issue). For the time being, revel in the mind twists, strategic challenges and functional problem solving tasks this week, no matter how frustrating. It’s a great reminder that our mind and intellect, so it says in the Corpus Hermeticum, is the thing that separates (Wo)Man from beast:
All men are subject to Destiny, but those in possession of the Logos, which commands the intellect from within, are not under it in the same manner as others. God’s two gifts to man of intellect and the Logos have the same value as immortality. If man makes right use of these, he differs in no way from the immortals.
Poimander, 1.12, based on translation by Yates, F., 1964, pp. 33-34
May you embrace Mercury and co-create with Destiny this week.
