As we enter the waning square of the Moon this week, we’re closing in on a  relatively positive lunar cycle with a big bang. The long awaited Venus Superior Conjunction is the main event this week. It’s a big deal because it’s the first time since the late 1800s that we’ve had a Venus Sun conjunction in Libra (23 Oct) and the first time for a Venus Sun Superior Conjunction since the late 10th Century. The Venus Sun Superior conjunction will now occur in Libra every eight years, for the next 100 years or so, with a small exception of the next instance which will recede back to Scorpio for one more time.

Large cycles aside, we will see Venus in this Superior Underworld phase of her cycle every 18 months, so it’s not entirely uncommon altogether when we don’t consider the sign factor. What we do know of the general Venus Superior Underworld phase is that the month or so leading up to the Venus Superior Conjunction (or Cazimi) can be some of the most challenging days of the entire 584-day Venus cycle. 

This Venus Superior Underworld phase often coincides with events that require you to see yourself in your most vulnerable state, having to drum up any reserves of courage to confront embedded pain or trauma, usually involving those closest to you. There’s a need to fully surrender into, and be consumed by, the darkness and heaviness of relationships, finances, self-esteem, worthiness and creativity. 

As you reflect on the past month when Venus entered the Underworld phase (since mid September 2022), have you felt an intensity and seriousness in relationship themes? Are long-standing issues in your personal relationships revealing themselves? Have you felt creatively blocked and losing interest in your current creative projects? Have you felt so uninspired by your environment that it makes you feel like checking out or quitting? Are financial pressures making you feel vulnerable, powerless and at a loss? Do you feel insecure? Is your self worth at a low? Are things that you previously valued not feeling like a priority anymore? These are some of the issues that can present during the Venus Superior Underworld phase. 

Sun and Venus make a trine to Mars (18 & 19 Oct) early in the week which offer some extra energy to trudge through your underworld journey. It’s like receiving a ‘second wind’ when you’re three-quarters through your marathon – in this case, three-quarters through the current lunation cycle where fatigue could be setting in. Use the trine from Mars this week to cut off anything that’s superfluous to your focused path, especially in the realm of the mind, ideas and thoughts that could induce stress and anxiety. Mars will help you to pinpoint some decisions and carve out your nexus where you’ll need focus and attention.

At the same time, Sun and Venus will also square Pluto (18 & 20 Oct), which can be destabilising and ungrounding, like an earthquake deciding to open up. Having recently stationed direct, Pluto’s impact on the Sun and Venus could see more hidden issues crack open that may be difficult to take. Refer to issue 35 to revisit more of Pluto’s themes. Issues of finances and the power dynamics of shared resources and personal binds could be the likely matter that Pluto dredges up for you. Consider any difficult themes being presented by this square as offerings to your Venus Sun altar as they too will be ripe for transmutation with the help of the Cazimi intervention. In other words, if you allow yourself to hold the challenges presented to you via the Pluto square, there’s an opportunity to make amends, find solutions and turn things around later this week if you can consciously work through this deep emotional process.

Which leads to my next point – that the great news of Venus and the Sun conjoining in a Cazimi this week (23 Oct), is that there’s an opportunity to redesign the pain, trauma, pressures and vulnerability of the past month, into renewed matter that can be cultivated over the next nine months. Use the Cazimi to reimagine your love and value for someone, a project or even yourself. You may like to ritualise this event by using the exact time of this conjunction to intentionally begin, purify or consecrate something in your life that is deeply connected to your heartspace. Consider any significant endeavours that are likely to unfold over the next nine month period as part of this intentional ceremony, to seek the blessings of Venus and the Sun at this powerful moment. And at the same time, consider that which you are releasing which may have significance to the past nine months when Venus was unfolding her Inferior Conjunction activities which started in early January 2022.

On the same day, Saturn will also be Stationing Direct while making a trine with Mercury (23 Oct). Being the exalted ruler of Venus, Sun and Mercury at this significant time, whilst in its powerful stationing point, shows that Saturn has a strong role to play in this Cazimi. Saturn holds the key to Venus’ ability to be seen and acknowledged in the Underworld, being its exalted ruler. Its trine to Mercury can help elevate your voice on this day, allowing your opinions, emotions and thoughts to be heard by those that matter, including the powers above should you wish to seek divine intervention. If feelings of rejection, abandonment and not being heard or appreciated are strong for you, look to the house of Aquarius around 18 degrees, as this is where there could be an outlet for your voice to be heard and your essence to be seen.

From the larger cycle perspective, the fact that Saturn is so strongly placed in this conjunction’s monumental return into the sign of Libra after centuries, alludes to the importance of structure, boundaries, duty and discipline in maintaining order, balance, equality and harmony within relating and social dynamics. A change that is long overdue and much desired.

Lastly, to add to the dramatics of this week, Venus and the Sun will immediately shift to the sign of Scorpio (23 Oct) right after its Cazimi, before aligning into the eclipse configuration for next week. I’ll discuss more about the eclipses next week, but for now, keep in mind that whatever transformations you achieve this week will have the opportunity to be tested immediately. There’s no time to be complacent about any progress or gains you may experience from the Cazimi. This is not a stop-to-give-yourself-a-pat-on-the-back moment. The upcoming eclipses in Venus’ exiled sign of Scorpio will be throwing you all kinds of challenges, fears, doubts and turbulence. So, be careful what you wish for this week as things will be taking a u-turn next. Perhaps the stationing Saturn speaks to your need to maintain stability, austerity and the middle path in all your desires.
