Quote of the week

When walking through the ‘valley of shadows,’

remember, a shadow is cast by a Light.

The two key events of the week are the Full Moon in Capricorn (14 July) and the Mercury Superior Cazimi (17 July) – both very much related with each other. Several smaller aspects group around these two events.

The Full Moon in Capricorn is engaging with Pluto, whilst nearing its peak of maximum declination, making for a wild encounter with dark feminine forces such as the Black Madonna and the archetype of the Dark Mother.  Issues to do with emotional wounds, security fears, abandonment, repression, oppression, sexuality, earth energy, control, power and transformational processes are being conjured on this Full Moon. On this Full Moon, you may expect that the depth of painful memories and emotions you could encounter are paralleled by the power of your resilience, resourcefulness and regenerative ability. Just think of the terrorising and destructive side of Mother Nature, as well as her ability to regenerate to her breathtaking beauty and allure. Or, the Mother that loves her child so much that she cages her child with her emotional co-dependency, limits the child’s development and suppresses its potential. The light of this Full Moon will be accentuated by its shadows, reminding us that love and happiness can’t exist without the acknowledgement of the darker, oppressed forces within. One leads to the other if you’re willing to confront the journey. The deeper you dig, the greater your potential for healing, acknowledgement and power – are you ready for the excavation?

Chances are, with the Moon so far out of bounds of its regular declination path, it may give you that extra push to engage in something outrageously different, unknown, refreshing or unpredictable to what you’re normally conditioned to do. This could be a week to break free of emotional bonds or behavioral conditioning that has thwarted your ability to progress. It’s also echoed by Mercury’s sextile with Uranus which is offering you permission to try something new, break your routine and think innovatively. Try to have an open mind this week because new solutions to old problems could be just what you need.

Think back to early January (2-3 Jan) at the Capricorn New Moon – there could have been some profound initiations around relationships, possessions, ownership, desires, lust, material assets, finances and issues of control, persuasion and temptation towards a challenge. You’re now at the other end of this journey and realisations could be flooding into your perception about your true emotional needs that could heal old wounds. Balancing these emotional needs against the obligation of the consensus world will be a challenge as the Moon is exiled in the pragmatic sign of Capricorn. So this week, you will be called to negotiate between matters of the head versus those of the heart – this pull will be strong so be ready to face some important polarisations between what you feel and what you ought to do.

Which path will you take? Hard to say, contradictions in the offing this week. Perhaps consider whether the Capricorn / Cancer polarity resides in your natal chart. These two areas of life are likely to experience the polarity of the heart and the mind. Take time to reflect on these areas and tap into what’s truly important for you.

Saturn ruling the Full Moon is Retrograde and making a trine to Venus as if it’s the time to revisit some old plans, strategies and decisions, especially to do with relationships, money, desire and abundance. It’s quite possible that women could be involved given Venus is making the trine – perhaps some assistance from a woman could be on the cards. Shortly after this, Venus squares Neptune and challenges could arise around your clarity to do with these matters. On the one hand, you may feel a nostalgic pull as you revisit these old plans and decisions, but on the other, this could completely overwhelm you with complexities that you may find challenging to process. As is the case with any Neptune connection, decisions are not to be made (especially relating to Venus matters – relationships, money, abundance, with women, etc.), due to its lack of clarity.

But by the week’s end, Mercury will conjunct the Sun in the very important halfway point of its cycle – the Superior Cazimi (17 July). Interestingly, Neptune is also connected to this Cazimi by trine which gives us a hint that whatever went down with Venus’ square three days earlier, is likely to now present in a new light and possibly offer a solution or important insight. For this Mercury Cazimi, it could be worthwhile to engage in a creative form of meditation if you want to work with this auspicious day. Painting, crafting, movement, dance, ritual bathing or even swimming could be good activities to get you in the zone of creative flow where you may receive some important downloads. It would also be a good day to work on the telepathic fields of communication and send messages out to those you can’t reach physically.

As this Mercury Cazimi occurs in the sign of Cancer, it’s likely that your intuition and feeling nature will be very strong and on point on this day. Take note of your gut feeling on this day – it can reveal a lot to you.

To this end, the fact that Mercury Cazimi occurs in the sign of the archetypal Ideal Mother (Cancer), while the Full Moon earlier in the week symbolises the Dark Mother, is another clue to the week’s theme of polarisation – the shadow vs the conscious, the heart vs the mind, the past vs the present, the good vs the evil. It’s important to remind ourselves that all of these parts exist within our inner universe, that the dance between these two sides are essential to our creative existence and a life of non-duality.

I’ll leave you with a short clip of an interview (3 mins) with renowned analyst Marion Woodman whose life’s work was inspired by polarity, the tension of opposites and the Dark Mother. I encourage you to listen to some of her longer lectures on these topics too as this week’s astrological symbology ideally reflects her philosophy (several available on YouTube). Another good resource to revisit this week is the famous Ceres & Persephone myth for it very much encapsulates the essence of this Capricorn Full Moon. If you work with any of these Goddesses, as I do with Persephone, be sure to leave her an offering on the Full Moon this week as it promises to be a potent portal to commune with her.

Thank you Shu. Your insights are always very profound and inspiring. I’ve been fascinated with Persefone since I was a child, remembering also of the pomegranate as a symbol of her and the myth (if I’m not wrong). I definitely should work on deepening my relationship with the goddesses, or I should say, building one, if I’m allowed to…I’m always scared of not being enough for it.
Have a nice week in the exploration of dark and light 🙂

Sounds like Persephone is calling you! She’s a lovely and powerful goddess to work with.
