The Grand Sextile of 2026
The little known Grand Sextile configuration has been taking shape in the sky since 2025 and will reach the greatest point of exactness in August 2026. This hexagram pattern according to astrologer, Bill Tierney in his book Dynamics of Aspect Analysis, is said to stimulate awareness of how our talents can be used to drive social causes and contribute to the greater environment. Through versatility, coordination, cooperation and creativity, the Grand Sextile allows opportunities, resources and skills to be maximised for greatest social benefit.
Larry Harvey: The Power of Collective Creativity
Larry Harvey, co-founder of the Burning Man movement, is an example of these principles in action. Born in 1948 when a Grand Sextile was at play, he created a small gathering on a beach in 1986 which grew into an annual event – a temporary city in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, where tens of thousands of people come together to create an entire community from the ground up. Participants actively contribute their own skills, creativity and resources – building large-scale artworks, offering workshops, performances, infrastructure, and acts of service – all guided by principles of participation, collaboration and communal responsibility. Harvey’s vision demonstrated how individual talents, when united by a shared purpose, can become a catalyst for collective transformation. His work offers a powerful example of how the greatest social impact often arises when personal gifts are expressed in service of something larger than oneself.

From a conceptual perspective of aspect theory, the Grand Sextile comprises the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th places which can offer us further insights into its meaning. When viewed in terms of the opposition aspects, we get three axis representing the following:
- 1st – 7th The balance of relationships between self and other
- 3rd – 9th The bridge between learning and mastery
- 5th – 11th Competing demands of personal and social contributions
The Thema Mundi conceptualises opposition aspects to the nature of Saturn, which demand pressure, hard work and restriction. The Grand Sextile’s three oppositions show that benefits only come through the perseverance of hardships, patience and endurance.

Edward Snowden: When Purpose Demands Personal Cost
Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor disclosed classified information about global surveillance programmes at the time of a Grand Sextile in 2013. He believed the public had a right to understand the extent of government surveillance and accepted extraordinary personal consequences for this including the loss of his career, exile from his homeland, ongoing legal jeopardy, and years of public scrutiny and controversy. Snowden’s story demonstrates how pursuing what one believes to be a greater good may demand immense courage, resilience and a willingness to endure profound hardship. It serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful contributions to society often come at a personal cost, requiring steadfast commitment in the face of adversity.
However, when we look at the Grand Sextile from the standpoint of trines, a softer sentiment is revealed. From the Vedic conceptualisation of the trines, we see the following themes emerge:
- 1st-5th-9th Dharma Trines, representing our true, righteous work in life
- 3rd-7th-11th Kama Trines, representing pleasure and relationships in life
These trines show the importance of cooperation, community and social connections as the higher truths and purpose of individuals are enacted. The Grand Sextile teaches us that in the background of hardship and pressure, the prevailing actions must be honourable, ethical and truthful to relationships, society and humanity.
The Marshall Plan: The Power of Collective Renewal
The Marshall Plan was introduced at the 1948 Grand Sextile, following the devastation of WW2 which saw the United States provide substantial economic assistance to help rebuild European economies, restore infrastructure and strengthen social stability. While motivated by strategic interests as well as humanitarian concerns, the program demonstrated how cooperation between nations could transform a period of immense hardship into an opportunity for renewal and collective recovery. It illustrates how, in times of crisis, actions guided by cooperation, generosity and a commitment to the broader wellbeing of humanity requires shared responsibilities and interdependence.

Suggested Practice for August 2026
As the Grand Sextile started to form in 2025, the rising pressures of war and global conflict is certainly creating the backdrop of tensions, restrictions and hardships, mainly caused by the movement of the slow-moving generational planets entering new signs, forcing change, new priorities and shifts in attitudes. But it is the faster-moving personal planets that are responsible for completing the hexagram this August 2026, and one hopes that through the personal actions of people, the dharmic and relational qualities of this configuration can emerge.
There are two moments in August when the full hexagram is moving towards its full formation. On 13 August, five of the six points will be in place (this also coincides with the first Total Eclipse in Leo in this series of eclipses) and 21 August, when the swift Moon temporarily completes the full Grand Sextile. Grands Sextile Timeline
Stage 1: Permanent Star Points
The four major points of the star are occupied by the slower moving planets in the signs of Aquarius (Pluto), Aries (Saturn & Neptune), Gemini (Uranus) and Leo (Jupiter) wchich leaves an additional two points in Libra and Sagittarius empty. When faster moving planets can fill in these missing star points temporarily, the 6-pointed star will be complete. And this will occur in August 2026.
Stage 2: Activation of the 5th star point – 13 August 2026
On August 13, Venus will move into Libra and take up space at the fifth star point, which also happens to coincide with the Total Solar Eclipse in Leo. If you happen to have any natal planets or significant points around 4° Sagittarius, your personal chart will complete the star. But don’t despair if you have nothing in Sagittarius, as the sixth point will be completed just around the corner!
Stage 3: Activation of the 6th star point – 21 August 2026
Around 21st August and a week before the next Lunar Eclipse in Pisces, the Moon will travel into the Sagittarius zone and very briefly complete the Grand Sextile. Even though all the points of the star aren’t exactly at the same degree, they have all been connected recently enough to still have memory of each other. Traditional texts tell us that the faster moving planets like the Moon, play an important role in ‘translating the light’ between planets that it connects with. As the Moon traverses degree by degree through Sagittarius, it will translate the light between all five star points, pulling their influences into a coherent exchange.
