Moon Gardening Calendar 10 Sep – 10 Oct 2022
Here is a summary of the dates that Claire, Lou and I discussed on the last episode of Dig-It Gardening Show on Saturday 12 September, covering the period between 10 September to 10 October 2022.
Optimal times for PLANTING
11 Sep (3rd Quarter Moon in Pisces) – Fertile time for longer term planting, perennials and trees. Attend to root crops. Deep watering of trees.
14-15 Sep (3rd Quarter Moon in Taurus) – Fertile for root crops, trees, perennials and bulbs to promote strong growth.
28-30 Sep (First Quarter Moon in Scorpio) – Very fertile time for sowing seeds, especially vegetables with seeds outside fruit / flower. Plant for strong, study growth of vines, plants and roots. Also a good time to till soil and turn compost. Good for transplanting and propogating.
3-4 October (Second Quarter Moon in Capricorn) – Fertile for planting especially for plants requiring strong stalks, roots and annuals with seeds inside the fruit/flower
7-8 October (Second Quarter Moon in Pisces) – Highly fertile time for planting, sowing seeds, propagating and transplanting to promote vigorous growth. Especially good for fruits / vegetables with seeds inside the fruit / flower.
27 Sep (First Quarter Moon in Libra) – Seeds for flowers, enrich soils, prepare beds / pots for planting, pruning to encourage growth (esp growth of flowers)
optimal times for clearing
The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.
19-20 Sep (4th Quarter Moon in Cancer) – Pruning to promote growth, making compost
24-25 Sep (4th Quarter Moon in Virgo) – Mulching to suppress weeds, composting, tilling soils
12-13 Sep (3rd Quarter Moon in Aries) – Weeding, mowing and pruning to discourage growth. All manner of clearing work, including burning off if appropriate.
16-18 Sep (3rd Quarter Moon in Gemini) – Weeding, mowing and pruning to discourage growth.
21-23 Sep (4th Quarter Moon in Leo) – Clearing unwanted weeds, cutting grass to suppress growth and pruning to destroy growth. Pest management.
1-2 October (First Quarter Moon in Sagittarius) – Pruning to encourage growth, rest, infertile time for planting. Building / landscaping.
5-6 October (Second Quarter Moon in Aquarius) – Infertile for planting. Pruning, slashing, clearing to promote growth. Prepare beds and pots for planting. Enrich soils.
Optimal times for rest
The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.
10 Sep (Full Moon in Pisces) – Rest, Harvest, Celebrate
26 Sep (New Moon in Libra) – Rest, Restore, Recuperate
10 October (Full Moon in Aries) – Harvest, Rest, Celebrate
optimal times for non-planting tasks
The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.
