Moon Gardening June / July 2021
Every month, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.
Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 19 June, covering the period between 19 June to 17 July 2021.
Optimal times for planting
19/20 June (2nd Quarter, Moon in Libra) – Suitable for sowing seeds for flowering annuals, otherwise, an infertile time for planting or transplanting.
21/22 June (2nd Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Happy Solstice! Fertile, moist time for planting, transplanting and propagating Especially good for annuals with seeds inside fruit and flower. Great time for establishing strong roots in plants.
26 June (3rd Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – Fertile time for tree planting, planting and transplanting shrubs, perennials and anything that grows on the same root stock every year. Root vegetables and bulbs are suitable for planting too.
14/15 July (1st Quarter, Moon in Virgo) – Average time for fertile growth – use these dates for planting if no other time is suitable. Great time for organising and planning around gardens and sheds.
16/17 July (1st Quarter, Moon in Libra) – Suitable for sowing seeds for flowering annuals, otherwise, an infertile time for planting or transplanting.
optimal times for clearing
The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.
23/24 June (2nd Quarter, Moon in Sagittarius) – Weeding and pruning to destroy unwanted growth. Also excellent for landscaping, building or burning off (if appropriate).
27/28 June (3rd Quarter, Moon in Aquarius) – Pruning, weeding and clearing to discourage unwanted growth.
29/30 June & 1st July morning (3rd Quarter, Moon in Pisces) – Composting, pruning to encourage growth, feeding garden.
2/3 July (4th Quarter, Moon in Aries) – Weeding, pruning and clearing to destroy unwanted growth. Pest removal.
4 / 5 July and 6 July AM only (4th Quarter, Moon in Taurus) – Pruning to encourage growth in plants.
7/8 July (4th Quarter, Moon in Gemini) – Clearing, weeding and pruning to destroy unwanted growth. Pest removal.
9 July (4th Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Pruning to encourage growth in plants.
Optimal times for rest
The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.
25 June – Full Moon in Capricorn – Rest the garden and body, harvest any crops.
10 July (New Moon in Cancer) – Rest, plan, design.
optimal times for non-planting tasks
The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.
23/24 June (2nd Quarter, Moon in Sagittarius) – Weeding and pruning to destroy unwanted growth. Also excellent for landscaping, building or burning off (if appropriate).–
11/12/13 July (1st Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Infertile time for planting but use energy and momentum for high energy tasks like landscaping, building, etc.
