Moon Gardening Calendar Dec / Jan
Every month, on the Saturday closest to the waning 3rd Quarter Moon, I meet with Lou Lorback and Claire Reynolds from Dig It – Gardening Is Not Cancelled, a weekly garden show on 94.9 Main FM, to talk about optimal times to plant, prune and rest for the upcoming lunar cycle.
Here is a summary of the dates that we discussed for the episode on Saturday 12 December 2020, covering the period between 12 December to 13 January 2021.
Optimal times for planting
16 / 17 Dec (1st Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – If conditions are right, use this time to plant and transfer annuals, preferably with seeds outside the fruit / flower. Capricorn encourages sturdy stalks and pulpy growth.
20 / 21 Dec (1st Quarter, Moon in Pisces) – Very fertile time for planting and transplanting, including annuals with seeds outside fruit / flower and root crops. Promotes high yields and quick germination.
25 / 26 /27AM Dec (2nd Quarter, Moon in Taurus) – Very fertile time for planting root crops and annuals especially with seed inside the fruit / flower. A desireable sign for multiplying plants. Promotes quick germination.
31 Dec (Third Quarter, Moon in Cancer) – Great time for planting trees, perennials and root crops if conditions are appropriate.
3PM / 4 / 5 Jan (Third Quarter, Moon in Virgo) – Appropriate for planting out trees or perennials, especially working with green, leafy shade trees and shrubs.
optimal times for clearing
The following days are best for pruning, weeding, pest control, cleaning and any activities where you would like to stunt growth. Dates where clearing for growth is encouraged will be stated.
12 / 13 Dec (4th Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Prune to encourage growth
14 / 15 Dec (4th Quarter, Moon in Sag) – Destroying unwanted growth, pest reduction
22 / 23 / 24 (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aries) – Infertile time for planting but great for high energy garden work like building or landscaping. Also great for destroying unwanted growth.
28 / 29 Dec (2nd Quarter, Moon in Gemini) – Prune to destroy unwanted growth, weeding, building and landscaping.
1 / 2 / 3AM Jan (Third Quarter, Moon in Leo) – Pruning and clearing to encourage growth
6 / 7 Jan (4th Quarter, Moon in Libra) – Prune and clear to encourage growth
8 / 9 Jan (4th Quarter, Moon in Scorpio) – Prune and clear to encourage growth
10 / 11 Jan (4th Quarter, Moon in Sag) – Prune, clear and weed to discourage growth. Pest removal is also recommended.
12 Jan (4th Quarter, Moon in Capricorn) – Prune and clear to encourage growth
Optimal times for rest
The following days are best to rest the garden and your body. Use these days to recuperate, enjoy the garden and exercise self care. Planning is also great to do on a New Moon. Also look at the optimal times for non-planting tasks (below) for other days of rest.
15 Dec (Solar Eclipse in Sag) – Rest
30 Dec (Full Moon in Cancer) – Rest, harvest
13 Jan (New Moon in Capricorn) – Rest
optimal times for non-planting tasks
The following dates are generally good for activities that don’t require planting but are nevertheless important tasks for the garden. Infrastructure works like netting, fencing, building, irrigation or landscaping are suited to these dates. Otherwise, use these days for rest.
18 / 19 Dec (1st Quarter, Moon in Aquarius) – Building, landscaping and other hardscaping tasks around the garden
22 / 23 / 24 (2nd Quarter, Moon in Aries) – Infertile time for planting but great for high energy garden work like building or landscaping. Also great for destroying unwanted growth.
